Kitchen Design

How to start designing your kitchen

The essence of interior design will always be about people and how they live - Albert Hadley

Sometimes it can be difficult to know where to start when designing your new kitchen. There are so many ideas and colours to choose from. You scrolll through a seemingly endless arrange of images online only to be more confused than when you started! We are here to help. Lets start with a few basics of kitchen design.

How do you use your kitchen?

The kitchen really is the heart of the home. Think about what you do in your kitchen currently. Do you cook every day? Is it a social hub? Do you help your kids with their homework in it? What works for you right now? What doesn't work? Would you like to use the room differently? Answering these questions is a great place to start thinking about your design. Do you need more worktop space for food preparation? Or do you tend to eat out and need less kitchen space, more living space? Do you want to have a seating area so the space is more sociable, perhaps for children or guests? These are really important things to think about before you start your kitchen design, or before you meet your designer so your kitchen can be designed to meet your needs and lifestyle.

  • Lighting

    Lighting

Good lighting is essential in any kitchen design. It can make a small kitchen feel larger, and a large kitchen feel more intimate. Lighting can also be used to highlight specific areas of your kitchen, such as your countertops or your backsplash.

Here are some tips on how to use lighting to good effect in a kitchen design.

    • Layer your lighting: Layering your lighting is one of the most effective ways to create a warm and inviting atmosphere in your kitchen. You can achieve this by using a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting. Ambient lighting provides overall illumination, task lighting illuminates specific work areas, and accent lighting adds visual interest
    • Use dimmer switches: Dimmer switches are a great way to control the amount of light in your kitchen. They allow you to adjust the brightness of your lights to suit your needs and create different moods.
    • Highlight specific areas: Use lighting to highlight specific areas of your kitchen that you want to draw attention to. For example, you can use under-cabinet lighting to highlight your countertops or pendant lights to highlight your island.
    • Consider natural light: Natural light is an important element in any kitchen design. If you have windows in your kitchen, make sure you take advantage of them by positioning your work areas near them.
  • Colour

    Colour

Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect colour for your kitchen cabinets and doors.

    • Consider the style of your kitchen: The style of your kitchen should be the first thing you consider when choosing a colour for your cabinets and doors. If you have a modern kitchen, you may want to choose a bold colour like black or navy blue. If you have a traditional kitchen, you may want to choose a more classic colour like white or cream.
    • Think about the size of your kitchen: The size of your kitchen is another important factor to consider when choosing a colour for your cabinets and doors. If you have a small kitchen, you may want to choose a light colour like white or cream to make the space feel larger. If you have a large kitchen, you may want to choose a darker colour like black or navy blue to add depth and dimension.
    • Consider the lighting in your kitchen: The lighting in your kitchen can also affect the way your cabinets and doors look. If you have a lot of natural light in your kitchen, you may want to choose a lighter colour like white or cream. If you have limited natural light, you may want to choose a darker colour like black or navy blue.
    • Look at other elements in your kitchen: When choosing a colour for your cabinets and doors, it’s important to consider other elements in your kitchen like your countertops, backsplash, and flooring. You want to choose a colour that complements these elements and creates a cohesive look.
    • Think about the resale value of your home: If you’re planning on selling your home in the future, it’s important to choose a colour that will appeal to potential buyers. Neutral colours like white, cream, and grey appeal to most people.
  • Style

    Style

Choosing the right style for your kitchen cabinets and doors can be a daunting task. The style you choose will have a significant impact on the overall look and feel of your kitchen. Some clients have a very specific look that they want to emulate. They may have seen a picture of a design they love and want to see how it would work in their own space. Perhaps they know exactly what shape cabinets they want, or have very definite design ideas. We can work with your ideas to design something that fits your design requirements, as well as helping you to get the practicalities of building, pluming and electrics in place to support your design.

However, many of our clients are not sure what they want. The choice of ranges, styles and colours can feel quite overwhelming for some. In these cases we are happy to guide you on what will suit the way you use the space, what works practically as well as what ranges, styles and colours are popular and timeless.

Please browse the Kitchen Ranges area on our website, as well as the galleries of past kitchens we have designed and installed. Pinterest is a great resource for ideas. And you can also call us to have a brochure sent out.

Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect style for your kitchen cabinets and doors:

    • Consider the overall style of your home: The style of your home should be the first thing you consider when choosing a style for your kitchen cabinets and doors. If you have a modern home, you may want to choose a sleek and contemporary style like handless doors, or flat slab doors. If you have a traditional home, you may want to choose a more classic style like Shaker-style.
    • Think about the size of your kitchen: The size of your kitchen is another important factor to consider when choosing a style for your kitchen cabinets and doors. If you have a small kitchen, you may want to choose a simple and uncluttered style to make the space feel larger. If you have a large kitchen, you may want to choose doors that will add more depth and dimension.
    • Look at other elements in your kitchen: When choosing a style for your kitchen cabinets and doors, it’s important to consider other elements in your kitchen like your worktops, backsplash or tiling and flooring. You want to choose a style that complements these elements and creates a cohesive look.
    • Resale value: If you’re planning on selling your home in the future, it’s important to choose a style that will appeal to potential buyers.
  • The Work Triangle

    The Work Triangle

What is the work triangle? Imagine a triangle in your kitchen which connects the cooking, storage and preparation areas. This is what kitchen experts call the work triangle. Usually these three points are the hob, the fridge and the sink areas as that is where the bulk of the work in a kitchen is carried out. A person should be able to move effortlessly in the middle of the work triangle between these three different areas which should be neither too big nor too small, and movement between these points should not be obstructed.

These guidelines help when designing a kitchen work triangle to help ensure that your kitchen is not only aesthetically pleasing, but is also practical and functional, helping you to use your kitchen in an efficient way. However, it is not always possible to incorporate the work triangle into your kitchen design due to the shape of your room, or the style of kitchen you choose for the room, for instance some kitchens are just one long run of units.

Additionally, if you are primarily using your kitchen as a social area rather than a cooking area, you may choose a different design where the work triangle is not a priority.
